Iris and Rose Benefit Concert and Reception
To raise funds and awareness of the Iris and Rose Foundation and its mission, Dr. Kenneth Rosenthal, an accomplished pianist will be performing works by Mozart, Hayden, Milhaud and Moravec accompanied by some of the most renowned and respected musicians in the metro area including pianist/composer Avraham Sternklar (who has been Dr. Rosenthal’s piano and composition teacher and coach since he was seven years old), and Frances C. Roberts (who is also a patient of Dr. Rosenthal’s), who will be directing the Iris Chamber Ensemble of Greater New York. The concert will be held at the Adelphi University Performing Arts Center in Garden City beginning at 4 p.m. It will be followed by a reception and silent auction. All proceeds will be used for needy patients and eye research through the Iris and Rose Foundation. A Rodgers & Hart Audition
Friends of the Garden City Public Library will sponsor a free one-hour musical comedy A Rodgers & Hart Audition” written and directed by David Houston. It’s 1940, and the world-famous song-writing team prepares a benefit for our besieged friends across the Atlantic. Unlikely celebrities audition and sing such Rodgers & Hart classics as “I Could Write a Book,” “Johnny One-Note,” “Manhattan,” “Isn’t It Romantic,” “Where Or When” and lots more. Performers will be: David Houston as Richard Rodgers, Rick Heuthe as Lorenz Hart; Melanie Lipton, Steve Corbellini, and Gail Merzer-Behrens take turns in costume as famous personalities of the day.

Resurrection Plans 2nd Annual Oktoberfest
Autumn is just around the corner, and Resurrection Lutheran Church is getting ready to celebrate. Plans are underway for “Oktoberfest 2013,” set for Saturday, Oct. 5, from 4 to 10:30 p.m. Event Chair Glen Boehmer says the second annual Oktoberfest at Resurrection is shaping up to be a spectacular community event. “We’re planning activities for children and families during the afternoon, such as games, German food and soft drinks. Then starting at 7, we’ll turn the focus to adults, continuing with The Luchow Quartet to provide authentic Oktoberfest music. German food will continue through the evening, including bratwurst, German potato salad, red cabbage and soft drinks. Guests may also purchase imported German beer and wine from the Beverage Garten.” New this year will be contests with prizes for Best-Dressed Frau, Best-Dressed Mann, and the Pitcher Holding Contest. Net proceeds from ticket sales will go toward supporting the missions of Resurrection. The event will take place under a huge tent on the beautiful church lawn along the Emmet Place entrance to the church. Art Exhibit
Fine art photography by Stephen Bitel will be exhibited through Sept. 30 in the Garden City Public Library’s gallery. View colorful photos including many topics such as animals, nautical, doors and windows, reflections, and more. The exhibit is free and open to the public during regular library hours at 60 Seventh St. in Garden City. Furniture Needed
The A.T.Stewart Exchange Consignment Shop at 109 Eleventh St. in Garden City is looking for furniture to add to its inventory. The shop can use cocktail tables, end tables, consoles, chairs of all types, dressers, dining room tables, breakfronts, servers, secretaries, mirrors, etc….it’s all in demand. If you have a particularly large piece, take a picture and show it to Maryann Caterino at the shop (516-746-8900). Consignees are paid 50 percent of the selling price. There is ample parking and the shop is conveniently located on the lower level of The Garden City Historical Society Museum. All proceeds from the A.T.Stewart Consignment Shop go towards the maintenance and upkeep of the Garden City Historical Society Museum, an original 1872 A.T.Stewart era Apostle Victorian structure.
Monthly Cancer Support Group
Franklin Hospital’s cancer support group meets in the former coffee shop at North Shore LIJ Franklin Hospital in Valley Stream. (Please note the new location for 2013.) The group regularly meets the first Monday of every month from 2 to 4 p.m. It is open to all cancer survivors, including family members and is ideal for people who need someone to talk to about the illness. Discussions include new medicines and treatments, advice on how to cope and also provides emotional support. Free Breast Cancer Support Groups
The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer program is offering new support groups. There is no cost for any group; however pre-registration is required. Additional groups are formed upon request, including groups for men with breast cancer and family members. All groups meet at Adelphi University School of Social Work in Garden City. •Support group for women with metastatic breast cancer will meet weekly for eight weeks from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m.
•A telephone support group for women with breast cancer will be held weekly for eight weeks from 10:30 a.m. to noon.

Clutterers Anonymous (CLA), a 12-step self-help group, offers help and support to those who have clutter problems in their homes or workplace. Volunteers Sought For Breast Cancer Program
If you’ve had breast cancer and want to pay it forward become a hotline volunteer. Women and men who are breast cancer survivors and others who are concerned about breast health issues can become volunteers at the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program in Garden City. Volunteers can help by doing fundraising and publicity, as well as by answering hotline calls. Hotline volunteers provide emotional support, information and referral services to callers with breast health concerns. Although the program is housed on Long Island, hotline services and telephone counseling are available to callers throughout New York State.
