To say the Garden City High School Girls Soccer team dominated throughout the post-season on its way to winning its second Nassau County Championship in four years would be an understatement. Four straight shutouts to complement an overall 14-3-1 record is what paved the way for the Lady Trojans to wind up in the winner’s circle. But then there was that pesky little manner of dispatching Rockville Centre in the finals.
As to be expected, it was no easy feat and with both teams so closely matched, the entire affair stretched out to 110 minutes. During that time there were a pair of 10-minute overtime periods and five-minute golden goals periods to go with an 80-minute tilt that eventually wound up having both teams needing penalty kicks to determine a victor. In the end, the Garden City gals went a perfect five-for-five on penalty kick attempts to capture the Nassau County Championship despite finishing second place in Conference A1. All that’s left is to add yet another piece of hardware to Garden City High School’s already-bulging trophy case.
