The Hicksville Public School District’s 22-year tradition of hosting local senior citizens for a special fall luncheon continued this year with a reception held in the high school gym. The luncheon was an in-house event planned and executed by administrators, staff and student groups.
“We are really excited to have you here so that you have an opportunity to not only see all the great things that our students do, but to also witness who they are,” said Superintendent of Schools Maureen Bright as she thanked the attendees for their ongoing support. “We want to thank you for the contributions you have made to our community and for joining with us today.”
The luncheon was a welcome return for the community, which had been cancelled last year due to Superstorm Sandy.
Students in matching aprons happily served beverages, salads, main courses and desserts to nearly 200 attendees. The table centerpieces, made by art students, were offered as take-home prizes.
As part of the entertainment, the marching band, directed by Meredith Boonshaft, played four “James Bond” movie songs, including Monty Norman’s “James Bond Theme” and Paul and Linda McCartney’s “Live and Let Die.” The string ensemble, directed by Amy Noll, performed three songs, including a medley from Alan J. Lerner and Frederick Loewe’s “Camelot,” before leading a singalong of Leo Friedman and Beth Slater Whitson’s “Let Me Call You Sweetheart” and the folksong “I’ve Been Working on the Railroad.” The Madrigal Singers, directed by Michelle Emeric, sang three songs a cappella, including Lalo Schifrin’s “Mission Impossible Theme.” Guests were also treated to a sneak preview of the upcoming stage production of Neil Simon’s “Fools,” performed by the theater department and directed by Caitlin Cassidy.
