Decking The Halls
The Garden City Community Church’s 27th Annual Christmas Tree/Bake Sale will take place on Saturday, Dec. 7 from 8 a.m. to noon for all residents. Attendees can expect to find the potentially perfect Christmas tree and wreath for their home, along with delicious pies and other goodies to serve their guests. A brass band will play Christmas carols as residents buy trees. The tree sale proceeds will go to the Youth Mission Trip with Next Step Ministries this coming summer and the funds from the bake sale will go to the Marty Lyons Foundation. Vendors will be in the Kensington Room where they will be selling gourmet food, gift baskets, Tupperware, jewelry and accessories and more.
Everyone is also invited to the church’s upcoming events during the Advent Season:
Sunday, Dec. 8 – Advent Breakfast at 9:15 am. The parish welcomes the Christmas season with a hot breakfast, a fun family-centered craft and a wonderful opportunity for fellowship.
Sunday, Dec. 15 – Vesper service in the sanctuary at 4:30 p.m. and all are invited to the Christmas dinner directly afterward, starting at 6 p.m. The service features a special musical celebration of the approaching birth of Jesus with the combined Alleluia, Carol, Cantamus and Adult Choirs. The popular candlelight hot dinner will have delicious food and fun fellowship for all.
Sunday, Dec. 22 – Church School Christmas Pageant after the 10:30 am service. The pageant is staged by the Sunday School with adorable actors in costume with music.
Tuesday, Dec. 24 – Three services:
Family service at 4 p.m.
Candlelight communion service at 8:30 p.m., with music prelude at 8:15 p.m.
Candlelight communion service at 11 p.m., with music prelude at 10:45 p.m.
The Garden City Community Church (GCCC) is located at the corner of Stewart Avenue and Whitehall Boulevard. On Sundays the GCCC has 8:30 a.m. communion in the chapel and 10:30 a.m. worship in the sanctuary. A Night In Bethlehem
Imagine taking a walk through Bethlehem during the time when Jesus was born. You and your family smell freshly baked bread, mold items out of clay, grind grain for your daily bread, or buy fruits and nuts from the marketplace. Suddenly, shepherds appear, telling you they have good news, and they take you to meet Mary and Joseph, and you see Baby Jesus your own eyes. This Christmas, Lutheran Church of the Resurrection will host “A Night in Bethlehem,” a hands-on Holy Land experience, Dec. 6 and 7, from 7 to 9 p.m. each evening.
All in the community are invited to come, bring family and friends to experience Christmas in a whole new way. During “A Night in Bethlehem,” participants will be welcomed by the census Taker and register their family in Bethlehem. You might make toys in the carpentry shop, assemble your own jewelry or weave a rug on the loom. Perhaps you’ll grind grain and knead bread; visit the spice shop and leatherworking shop. Don’t be surprised if you get a visit from the tax collector and maybe even the pesky Roman Guards. You will definitely hear the good news from the excited shepherds and have an opportunity to visit the stable—to visit with Mary, Joseph, and the Baby Jesus. Reservations are suggested. Admission is free, while a freewill offering will be collected to cover costs and award to missions. Mozart’s Requiem
The Waldorf Choral Society’s 40th Anniversary concert will feature soloists, chorus and orchestra along with George V. Rose conducting his final performance before retiring. Christ Church Women Christmas Dinner
Christ Church Women (CCW) annually supports Women in the Military and this year, CCW is supporting Captain Patti Kast stationed in Afghanistan by sending travel sets. The travel sets include lip balm and other toiletries which are in great need. The Christmas Dinner Party will be held at The Pompeii on 401 Hempstead Ave. in West Hempstead at 6:15 p.m. Cost is $25 per person. Community Theatre Auditions
The Garden City Community Theatre will be holding auditions for its spring 2014 musical comedy revue. This original production, Diamonds in the Rough, is being written and directed by Garden City residents Brad and Ruby Gustavson. The show dates are March 28, 29 and 30, 2014. There are roles for adult men and women, teens and kids, grades three through eight. Auditions will be held at the Garden City Community Church. Third through eighth graders audition from 7:30 to 8:30 pm and teens and adults audition from 8:30 to 9:30 pm. Auditions will also be held on Friday, Dec. 13. Garden City Republican Committee Holiday Party
The Garden City Republican Committee will be hosting a very special holiday celebration on at the Garden City Historical Society on Eleventh Street from 7 to 9 p.m. Food will be provided by Caligeros and Garden City Pizza will provide delicious food for our enjoyment. Members of the U.S. Marine Corps have also been invited so attendees are asked to please bring an unwrapped toy for the Marine Corps’s Toys for Tots program. All are invited.

Furniture Needed
The A.T. Stewart Exchange Consignment Shop at 109 Eleventh St. in Garden City is looking for furniture to add to its inventory. The shop can use cocktail tables, end tables, consoles, chairs of all types, dressers, dining room tables, breakfronts, servers, secretaries, mirrors, etc….it’s all in demand. If you have a particularly large piece, take a picture and show it to Maryann Caterino at the shop (516-746-8900). Consignees are paid 50 percent of the selling price. There is ample parking and the shop is conveniently located on the lower level of The Garden City Historical Society Museum. All proceeds from the A.T.Stewart Consignment Shop go towards the maintenance and upkeep of the Garden City Historical Society Museum, an original 1872 A.T.Stewart era Apostle Victorian structure.

Clutterers Anonymous (CLA), a 12-step self-help group, offers help and support to those who have clutter problems in their homes or workplace. Monthly Cancer Support Group
Franklin Hospital’s cancer support group meets in the former coffee shop at North Shore LIJ Franklin Hospital in Valley Stream. The group regularly meets the first Monday of every month from 2 to 4 p.m. It is open to all cancer survivors, including family members and is ideal for people who need someone to talk to about the illness. Discussions include new medicines and treatments, advice on how to cope and also provides emotional support. Free Breast Cancer Support Groups
The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer program is offering new support groups. There is no cost for any group; however pre-registration is required. Additional groups are formed upon request, including groups for men with breast cancer and family members. All groups meet at Adelphi University School of Social Work in Garden City. Volunteers Sought For Breast Cancer Program
If you’ve had breast cancer and want to pay it forward become a hotline volunteer. Women and men who are breast cancer survivors and others who are concerned about breast health issues can become volunteers at the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program in Garden City. Volunteers can help by doing fundraising and publicity, as well as by answering hotline calls. Hotline volunteers provide emotional support, information and referral services to callers with breast health concerns. Although the program is housed on Long Island, hotline services and telephone counseling are available to callers throughout New York State.
