Just prior to the Thanksgiving holidays, Division Avenue High School’s World Language Honor Society, working in conjunction with the English as a Second Language Department held a Thanksgiving luncheon for English language learners in the Levittown School District. Students from Jonas E. Salk Middle School and Division Avenue High School attended the event at the Levittown Memorial Education Center, where they learned more about the history and significance of Thanksgiving.
According to Michele Ortiz, a foreign language curriculum associate and adviser for the WLHS, the purpose of the event was to expose non-native students, some of whom have lived in the community for a short period of time, to this cherished American holiday tradition. Some of the ELL students also told their individual tales about immigrating to the United States.
In addition, the event gave culinary students in the Gerald R. Claps Career and Technical Center, a chance to showcase their skills. Under the supervision of their instructor, Chef William Samboy, students prepared and served a traditional
American Thanksgiving feast of turkey, stuffing, creamed corn, mashed potatoes, salad and berry pie.
“We hope you will embrace our Thanksgiving traditions as part of your new culture,” said Division Avenue Principal Joan Lorelli.
