Commemorations And Veteran’s Forum For 2014
As we wrap up holiday festivities and look towards the future, veterans are on the top of the Life Enrichment Center at Oyster Bay’s list. Veterans hold a special place at our center throughout the year and this year’s Veterans Day Celebration was one to remember. In 2014 the center is launching a monthly group meeting especially for veterans.
Last year’s Veterans Day celebration was extra special. The honor guard was greeted by an entire room of voices singing songs commemorating every branch of service. A choreographed dance presentation by the center’s own ballroom dancing dynamic duo, Steve and Kathy Pagano, depicted a young couple’s reunion after World War II. The crowded main hall was brought to its feet as the couple rocked the floor to the sounds of the “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy” that ended with a kiss. With Steve in full uniform and Kathy, the center’s line-dance instructor in a short skirt and sneakers, the entire room was transported back into the throes of World War II and the kiss marked the moment the war was declared over. Veteran’s Day at the center is always a special day of commemoration with great love and respect for our servicemen but everyone agreed with tears in their eyes that this day will never be forgotten!
Liz Fiordalisi, the center’s new full time social service coordinator, is happy to announce that beginning in January, the Veteran’s Forum meetings will be held 11 a.m. the second Wednesday of each month. These meetings will provide an opportunity for veterans to connect with each other, to learn about resources and benefits available, and to enjoy educational opportunities throughout the year. The first meeting of the Veteran’s Forum will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 8 at 11 a.m. Matthew Rufrano from the Town of Oyster Bay Veterans Services Division will conduct a presentation on Veteran’s Benefits followed by a question and answer session. All veterans are encouraged to attend.
