How To Pay Less Income Tax
Barry Lisak will lead a seminar to help reduce federal and New York State taxes at the Garden City Public Library at 7 p.m. Lisak, who is an IRS-enrolled agent and tax professional, is currently the tax columnist for New York’s civil service paper The Chief. All new 2013 tax laws will be highlighted and a free booklet, 21 IRS Audit Red Flags, will be distributed to all attendees. Topics include education, retirement, home ownership, charitable, medical, investment, employee and miscellaneous deductions. Remember to bring a pad and pencil. There is no registration and all are welcome.

Buskin & Batteau have been winning hearts and minds with their soulful acoustic balladry and fun-filled performances for more years than they care to remember. Famous in the eighties as superstar jingle writers—Batteau’s “Heartbeat of America” heads a list of a hundred or more hits—they’ve also divided their time between writing songs for other artists—Judy Collins, Tom Rush, Astrud Gilberto, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Peter, Paul and Mary and Bette Midler; helping a diverse group of non-profits—Paul Newman’s Hole-In-The-Wall Camps, Harry Chapin’s WhyHunger, Roger Payne’s Ocean Alliance, among others; and hosting their quirky, unpredictable Radio B&B show on WPKN-FM and WPKN.org. Their latest CD, Love Remembered, Love Forgot, was recorded at Neale Eckstein’s Fox Run Studios in Sudbury, MA. A Look Back In Time
Garden City Library to be featured
The History of Garden City Public Library will be exhibited from Feb. 1– 27 in Garden City Public Library’s gallery. The display is presented by Garden City’s Historian Suzie Alvey who notes, “What makes the library so special is the many people who saw a need and were inspired to create it, as well as its fast growth as a center of the Garden City community.” Exhibits are free and open to the public during regular library hours. Blood Drive
Long Island Blood Services will hold a blood drive at the Garden City Public Library from 1:45 to 7:45 p.m. in the large meeting room on the lower level of the library. Area hospitals are in need of local residents’ help. Each donation can help to save up to three lives. Eligible donors must be between 16 and 75 years of age, with a minimum weight of 110 lbs., and no tattoos within the past 12 months. Sixteen year olds must have parental permission and donors age 76 and over must present a doctor’s note. All donors must have valid ID with signature or photo. Donors are encouraged to eat well (low fat) and drink fluids. For medical questions concerning blood donations, call 1-800-688-0900. Call the Library at 742-8405, ext. 210 to schedule an appointment. Walk-ins are welcome.

Furniture Needed
The A.T.Stewart Exchange Consignment Shop at 109 Eleventh St. in Garden City is looking for furniture to add to its inventory. The shop can use cocktail tables, end tables, consoles, chairs of all types, dressers, dining room tables, breakfronts, servers, secretaries, mirrors, etc….it’s all in demand. If you have a particularly large piece, take a picture and show it to Maryann Caterino at the shop (516-746-8900). Consignees are paid 50 percent of the selling price. There is ample parking and the shop is conveniently located on the lower level of The Garden City Historical Society Museum. All proceeds from the A.T.Stewart Consignment Shop go towards the maintenance and upkeep of the Garden City Historical Society Museum, an original 1872 A.T.Stewart era Apostle Victorian structure.

Franklin Hospital’s cancer support group meets in the former coffee shop at North Shore LIJ Franklin Hospital in Valley Stream. The group regularly meets the first Monday of every month from 2 to 4 p.m. It is open to all cancer survivors, including family members and is ideal for people who need someone to talk to about the illness. Discussions include new medicines and treatments, advice on how to cope and also provides emotional support. Free Breast Cancer Support Groups
The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer program is offering new support groups. There is no cost for any group; however pre-registration is required. Additional groups are formed upon request, including groups for men with breast cancer and family members. All groups meet at Adelphi University School of Social Work in Garden City. Volunteers Sought For Breast Cancer Program
If you’ve had breast cancer and want to pay it forward become a hotline volunteer. Women and men who are breast cancer survivors and others who are concerned about breast health issues can become volunteers at the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program in Garden City. Volunteers can help by doing fundraising and publicity, as well as by answering hotline calls. Hotline volunteers provide emotional support, information and referral services to callers with breast health concerns. Although the program is housed on Long Island, hotline services and telephone counseling are available to callers throughout New York State.
