Water District Bond Approved

The Town of North Hempstead council unanimously approved, at its February meeting, a $20.9 million bond requested by the Roslyn Water District.

The purpose of the bond is to build an air stripper, one that would eliminate possible contamination coming from a well on Diana’s Trail in Roslyn Estates.

For the vote, the meeting room was packed with both Roslyn Estates residents and water district officials.

In time, public discussion turned from concerns about using an air stripper to those about air toxins. Roslyn Estates residents are worried about the long-term effects of the airborne Freon22 residue, one that the air stripper is intended to combat.

Another discussion was held about moving the well in question on Diana’s Trail to another location. The most likely alternative would be to a wooded section of Christopher Morley Park.

Under such a scenario, the water district would buy the land from Nassau County, the current owner of the park.

Supervisor Judi Bosworth has allowed for six weeks for such a transaction to be completed. Her primary concern is to continue to provide safe drinking water to the residents of the water district. She said that unless the transaction could be completed within that time period, the water district was to take steps to construct the air stripper on Diana’s Trail.

For that Diana’s Trail facility, the water district has planned on erecting a water stripper, where Freon toxins are removed from the water and the residue sent out via a 34 ft. high, 8 ft. wide silo-like structure.

In addition, a house-like building would be built around the water stripper. That would be consistent with Roslyn Estate’s countrified atmosphere.
