Recycle The Rain Program

rain

rainNorth Hempstead’s “Recycle the Rain” water conservation program allows residents to purchase 50-gallon rain barrels at a discounted rate of $50. The rain barrels can recycle as much as 1,800 gallons of storm water during in a single summer season. Close to 600 residents have already signed up.

While you’re recycling the rain for your garden, you can add some organic material to your soil using your own home composter. By taking part in the Town’s Composting Cooperative you can keep yard and kitchen waste out of our landfills and turn it into nutrient filled organic matter. Composters with a retail value of $150 are provided at a subsidized fee of $50.

Residents interested in participating in either program are given an instructional class held at Clark Botanic Garden, located at 193 I.U. Willets Road in Albertson. Classes are approximately a half hour and are held back-to-back. Upcoming classes are Saturday, May 10 at 11 a.m., Tuesday, May 13 at 10 a.m. and Thursday, May 15 at 7 p.m. For more information, 3all 311 or visit www.northhempsteadny.gov.
