Dinner & A Movie: I AM
I AM is an utterly engaging and entertaining non-fiction film that poses two practical and provocative questions: what’s wrong with our world, and what can we do to make it better? The filmmaker is Tom Shadyac, one of Hollywood’s leading comedy practitioners and the creative force behind such blockbusters as Ace Ventura, Liar Liar, The Nutty Professor, and Bruce Almighty. Discussion led by Arthur Dobrin, Leader Emeritus, Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island and Hofstra professor. Films on sustainable living are showing on Thursday evenings from through April 17 at 6:30 p.m. at the Garden City Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island on 38 Old Country Rd. Each film is followed by a discussion led by a local solutions expert. Tickets are $15 per night ($12 /ticket for ages 55+ and students with ID). This includes the movie, dinner and discussion. Sweet to Lick of Williston Park, a vegan bakery, is providing a soup dinner. Gain an insider’s view of book publishing with Jan Kardys, president of Black Hawk Literary Agency, who will be appearing at the Garden City Public Library at 1 p.m. Understand how to find and lure the right literary agent. God Loves Uganda Screening
The Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Central Nassau (UUCCN) will host a screening of the Sundance-selected film God Loves Uganda—a powerful exploration of the fundamentalist evangelical campaign to change African culture with values imported from America’s Christian Right. God Loves Uganda will screen on Saturday, April 5, at 6:30 p.m., at 223 Stewart Ave. (corner of Nassau Boulevard) in Garden City. The American Evangelical exportation of intolerance, particularly against the LGBT community, has reached a new dangerous level. Most recently, the Ugandan ‘Jail the Gays’ bill has been making international headlines, especially since it was signed into law last month. This notorious bill, which is largely American-influenced, seeks to harshen the punishment and criminalization of homosexuality.
This screening is open to the public, and a $10 suggested donation will be collected for the UU LGBT Uganda Fund, which helps human rights activists—including members of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Uganda—protect people whose safety is threatened and fight for social justice and LGBT rights. After the film, a discussion will be led by John Wambere aka “Long Jones” whose activism is documented in the film. Wambere is operations coordinator for Spectrum Uganda Initiatives, a non-governmental organization that focuses on the gay and transgender community in Uganda.

Free Breast Cancer Support Groups
The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer program is offering new support groups. There is no cost for any group; however pre-registration is required. Additional groups are formed upon request, including groups for men with breast cancer and family members. All groups meet at Adelphi University School of Social Work in Garden City. Furniture Needed
The A.T.Stewart Exchange Consignment Shop at 109 Eleventh St. in Garden City is looking for furniture to add to its inventory. The shop can use cocktail tables, end tables, consoles, chairs of all types, dressers, dining room tables, breakfronts, servers, secretaries, mirrors, etc….it’s all in demand. If you have a particularly large piece, take a picture and show it to Maryann Caterino at the shop (516-746-8900). Consignees are paid 50 percent of the selling price. The shop is conveniently located on the lower level of The Garden City Historical Society Museum. All proceeds from the A.T.Stewart Consignment Shop go towards the maintenance and upkeep of the Garden City Historical Society Museum.
Volunteers Sought For Breast Cancer Program
If you’ve had breast cancer and want to pay it forward become a hotline volunteer. Women and men who are breast cancer survivors and others who are concerned about breast health issues can become volunteers at the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program in Garden City. Volunteers can help by doing fundraising and publicity, as well as by answering hotline calls. Hotline volunteers provide emotional support, information and referral services to callers with breast health concerns. Although the program is housed on Long Island, hotline services and telephone counseling are available to callers throughout New York State. Clutterers Anonymous (CLA), a 12-step self-help group, offers help and support to those who have clutter problems in their homes or workplace. Monthly Cancer Support Group
Franklin Hospital’s cancer support group meets in the former coffee shop at North Shore LIJ Franklin Hospital in Valley Stream. The group regularly meets the first Monday of every month from 2 to 4 p.m. It is open to all cancer survivors, including family members and is ideal for people who need someone to talk to about the illness. Discussions include new medicines and treatments, advice on how to cope and also provides emotional support.
