Hugh Howard on Presidents’ Houses
The Friends of Sagamore Hill presents Hugh Howard on April 3, at 7 p.m. in Christ Church Parish Hall, 61 East Main St. His book is Houses of the Presidents: Childhood Homes, Family Dwellings, Private Escapes, and Grand Estates. He will feature the Roosevelt Home at Sagamore Hill in the wider context of American domestic architecture. Admission and refreshments are free to all. Ceramic Exhibit Opens
The Oyster Bay Historical Society hosts an exhibit by members of the Long Island Craft Guild in the Koenig Center, 20 Summit Street, from April 5 through June 6. Several members of the guild are from Oyster Bay. The theme of the exhibit is Tea Time, so look forward to seeing some wonderful teapots and cups. For information please call 516-624-5032.
April Fool’s Hike
Sagamore Hill National Historic Site hosts an April Fool’s Hike. Truth or tall tale? A milk snake really drinks milk. Skunks love to eat skunk cabbage. See if you can catch the fakery from the facts on April 5, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Join naturalist Lois Lindberg for some fun on an irreverent tour of the grounds and nature trails. It’s Time for Tea
The Oyster Bay Historical Society opens its spring exhibition, It’s Time for Tea!, with an afternoon reception on Sunday, April 6, from 3 to 6 p.m. The exhibition will remain on view at the Koenig Center, 20 Summit St., through June 8. The exhibit features ceramics by members of the Long Island Craft Guild’s Clay Media Group. Both functional and sculptural work relating to tea—pots and bowls, cups, mugs, and sugar/creamer sets —will be on view and for sale at the Historical Society’s Koenig Center for the course of the exhibition. Mandolin Experience
The Locust Valley Library presents an all-acoustic program with mandolin music written by Buddy Merriam. This high-energy concert will have elements of Bluegrass, Jazz, and Classical music on April 6 at 2 p.m. The Friends of the Library will provide light refreshments. First come, first served. The Town of Oyster Bay Department of Community and Youth Services, co-sponsoring with the Locust Valley Library, presents these concerts as part of CAPA’s Distinguished Artists Concert Series 2013-2014. Budget Adoption
The Oyster Bay-East Norwich Central School District holds its fifth meeting on the 2014-2015 budget as they finalize and vote to adopt the amount needed to run the district in the next school year, on Tuesday, April 8, at 8 p.m. Attending the school board meetings are a great way of enhancing your child’s school experience as you become more aware of the district goals and how they are achieving them. Mansions at Mill Neck Manor
Victoria Crosby, noted journalist and poet, will present “Mansions of England and North America” on April 10 at 6:30 p.m., which begins with a brief, docent-led tour of the Dodge-Sloane Estate, the Mill Neck Manor House, followed by a presentation on a number of British and American architectural treasures. Admission of $30 includes the tour, lecture and light refreshments. Reservations are required and may be done online by or by calling 516-628-4243. Sign language interpreters will be available for guests who are deaf, provided a request is made in advance.
Hearing Screening
Screening for adults, and children ages 5 and up will be provided by an audiologist from Mill Neck Manor Audiology on April 10 at 10 a.m. at the Locust Valley Library. Come and learn about devices available to improve communication skills. No appointment is necessary. Screening will take place in the Quiet Study Room. AARP Driving Course
The Locust Valley Library offers an AARP Driving Course on April 11 at 9:30 a.m. Save 10 percent on vehicle liability and collision premiums for 3 years. Reduce up to 4 points on your driving record. Locust Valley residents have open registration. Non-resident registration began April 1. There is a non-refundable $20 fee for AARP members; $25 fee for non-members. Kiddie Egg Hunt
The Locust Valley Library holds an Egg Hunt on April 11 from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Children ages 2-5 are invited to join them for an egg hunt, stories, and a craft. Food Pantry
The North Shore Assembly of God, 84 Orchard St., Oyster Bay is operating a new food pantry for the community. It is meant to supplement the growing needs of the community. It is open on Tuesdays during their prayer times: 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. If you are in need of their service, please call Pastor Diane at 516-922-2547 and make an appointment to complete their screening process.
