Josh Langman of Syosset, a fifth-grader at the Long Island School for the Gifted, was selected as a semifinalist by the National Geographic Society to compete in the 2014 new York National Geographic Bee.
This is the second level of the National Geographic Bee competition, which is now in its 26th year. Bees were held in schools with fourth- through- eighth-grade students thorughout the state to determine each school’s Bee winner.
School-level winners then took a qualifying test which they submitted to the National Geographic Society.
The society invited the students with the top 100 scores in the nation to compete at the state level.
The 2014 New York Geographic Bee will be held at the New York State Museum in Albany in April. The state winner will receive $100, the “Competle National Geographic on DVD,” and a trip to Washignton, DC to represent NY in the national finals at the Natiaonl Geographic Society headquarters from May 19 to 21.
The first-place national winner will receive a $50,000 college scholarship and lieftime membership in the Socitety. The national winner will also travel all expenses paid to the Galapagos Islands to experince geography firsthand through up-close encounters with the islands’ uniqe wildlife and lansacpe.
National Geographic Channel and Nat Geo Wild will air the final roudn of the Naional bee, moderated by host Soledad O’Brien on May 22 at 7 p.m.
