Art With A French Twist
Art history scholar Louise Cella Caruso will present a free visual art lecture “Musee d’Orsay, Paris” on Thursday, May 22, at 1:30 p.m. at the Garden City Public Library (GCPL) located at 60 Seventh St. Discover the unique transition from train station to art museum and its collection during this illustrated talk. The 1898 Beaux-Arts railway station Gare d’Orsay was shuttered in 1939 due to short platforms unsuitable for longer trains. Originally constructed for the Universal Exposition of 1900, it now houses the largest collection of impressionist & post-impressionist masterpieces in the world by painters including Monet, Manet, Degas, Renoir, Cézanne, Seurat, Sisley, Gauguin and Van Gogh.
Louise Cella Caruso has made numerous presentations throughout the tri-state area. Her background combines bio-nutrition, certification in art and antique appraising, and a degree in communications. She has continued research at museums in the United States and Europe including the Metropolitan and Philadelphia museums of art, the Prado, Louvre, Uffizi, and more. This public program is funded by Friends of the Garden City Public Library. Garden City residents will be given priority by presenting their GCPL card at the program room door. Non-residents will be accommodated on a space available basis 10 minutes before show time. No saved seats. Limited parking. No tickets are required. For directions, please call 516-742-8405.
