Class Of 2013 Continues Trends

According to the New York State Education Department, Hicksville’s Class of 2013 is on par with years prior in regards to how many students graduated with Regents diplomas and went on to college.

In 2013, 97%  (395) of the graduating class earned a Regents diploma and 45% (185) earned a Regents diploma with an advanced designation. These numbers are very similar to 2012, when 96% (407) of the graduating class earned a Regents diploma and 42% (180) earned a Regents diploma with an advanced designation.

These numbers show consistency with five years ago; in 2008 90% of seniors earned a Regents diploma and 48% earned an advanced designation.

“We are pleased that our students have mainted a high rate of performance in achieving Regents Diplomas, most especially in light of the increased requirements and expectations at the State level. We continue to encourage students to strive to achieve a Regents Diploma with advanced designation,” said Superintendent Maureen Bright.

Hicksville graduates also show a proclivity toward attending college. In 2013, 91% of seniors went on to college (with 38% going onto a 2 year college) and 53% going onto a 4 year college). In 2012, 92 % of graduates went onto college, similar to in 2008 when 93% went onto college.

Bright says that guidance staff, teachers and administration work with students and parents, to ensure they are knowledgeable on how to achieve their academic goals. She says the district offers 19 Advanced Placement and 15 college level courses, which “enhance students’ experience and their opportunities to attend colleges of their choice.” Over the past several years, students have been accepted into prestigious schools such as Harvard University, Yale University, New York University, Columbia University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The Class of 2013 received over 21 million in scholarship awards.
