lWilliam Averell Harriman was a politician, businessman and son of railroad baron E.H. Harriman who served under President Truman as Secretary of Commerce and later became the 48th Governor of New York.

Harriman was a candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1952 and 1956. He served as special envoy to Europe and served as the U.S. Ambassador to the Soviet Union and Britain.
