Spring Into Summer Luncheon
The recreation and parks department will hold a “Spring into Summer” luncheon at noon in St. Paul’s Cluett Hall. The cost of this event will be $5 and reservations are needed for this program.

The Garden City High School’s Italian Club proudly sponsors this annual banquet where attendees can come and enjoy delicious Italian food, dancing and music. This year’s event will be held at 5:30 p.m. in The Garden City High School Cafeteria which is located at 170 Rockaway Ave. Admission is: Adults – $12; Children – $8. All proceeds go to the Italian Club’s Funds for various activities throughout the school year for students and to the Carlo Mazarese Scholarship. Steven Velez Art Exhibit
Late high school grad to be honored
The art of Steven Velez and friends will be on view at the Garden City Public Library from June 2–30 at 60 Seventh St., in Garden City. This gallery exhibit honors the talent, life and memory of 2012 Garden City High School graduate Steven Velez who was an accomplished artist. He lost his battle with depression in November. Steven’s parents, Lauren and Laureano Velez Jr., his sister, Madeline, and his artist friends invite the community to join in a preview opening reception at the library on Saturday, May 31 at 3 p.m.
Perez, an Advanced Placement art student in high school, had studied with Lisa Fazio at The Garden Art Studio in Mineola, completed summer programs at Fashion Institute of Technology in Manhattan and was enrolled as an art major at Nassau Community College. His watercolor and acrylic paintings and marker, charcoal, ink and crayon drawings in the show include landscapes and portraits.
Many of his friends represented in the exhibit were fellow Advanced Placement art students at Garden City High School. Several are pursuing art studies in college.
Among the artists are Joanna Abballe (Lesley University); Veronica Agarwal (School of Visual Arts); Toni-Ann Giammona (School of Visual Arts); Marcie Imbrenda (Fashion Institute of Technology); Jia Kelleher (Mount Holyoke College); Jeyn Laundrie (Art Institute of Boston); Keara Martin (SUNY Purchase).

Annual Belmont Festival
Angelic Voices On High
Las Cantantes, the only collegiate women’s choir in the State of New Mexico, will be appearing on Friday, June 6 at Garden City’s Cathedral of the Incarnation. The show will begin at 7 p.m and will be directed by Dr. Maxine Thévenot. Las Cantantes is comprised of 18 singers who are selected via audition. This ensemble studies, rehearses and performs the finest literature written for treble voices. The ensemble is, at times, accompanied by other instruments such as the harp, percussion, piano, and pipe organ. The program will include a sung mass, several short anthems/motets including works by Eleanor Daley, Bob Chilcott, Bradley Ellingboe, Sandra Milliken, and Andrew Carter. Suggested Donation: $20 general seating, $10 Seniors & students, children under 13 are admitted free. The Cathedral of the Incarnation is located at 50 Cathedral Avenue. Free Breast Cancer Support Groups
The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer program is offering new support groups. There is no cost for any group; however pre-registration is required. Additional groups are formed upon request, including groups for men with breast cancer and family members. All groups meet at Adelphi University School of Social Work in Garden City. The A.T.Stewart Exchange Consignment Shop at 109 Eleventh St. in Garden City is looking for furniture to add to its inventory. Volunteers Sought For Breast Cancer Program
If you’ve had breast cancer and want to pay it forward become a hotline volunteer. Women and men who are breast cancer survivors and others who are concerned about breast health issues can become volunteers at the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program in Garden City. Volunteers can help by doing fundraising and publicity, as well as by answering hotline calls. Hotline volunteers provide emotional support, information and referral services to callers with breast health concerns. Although the program is housed on Long Island, hotline services and telephone counseling are available to callers throughout New York State. Monthly Cancer Support Group
Franklin Hospital’s cancer support group meets in the former coffee shop at North Shore LIJ Franklin Hospital in Valley Stream. The group regularly meets the first Monday of every month from 2 to 4 p.m. It is open to all cancer survivors, including family members and is ideal for people who need someone to talk to about the illness. Discussions include new medicines and treatments, advice on how to cope and also provides emotional support.
