Alveys To Be Honored

On Thursday, June 12, Rob and Suzie Alvey will be honored by the Mineola Garden City Rotary Club at its annual Community Service Award Dinner which will be held at the Garden City Country Club from 6 to 10 p.m. Given how the Alveys are so intrinsically woven into the fabric of the local community, this honor is well deserved.

Rob Alvey is the steward and soul of what’s officially known as Nassau County Storm Water Basin No. 232 that currently goes under the moniker of Garden City Bird Sanctuary/Tanners Pond Environmental Center. For nearly two decades, he has overseen the transformation of this neglected nine acres into an eco-friendly oasis that serves as a haven for both wildlife and harried individuals seeking a respite from the chaos of everyday life. The seeds for it were planted back in 1992, when he was appointed to the Village of Garden City Environmental Board.

Suzanne Alvey was named historian for the Village of Garden City in addition to being a member of the Civic Beautification Committee since 2009  (and a regular contributor to Garden City Life)  Alvey is a professional artist, a volunteer with the Nassau County Art League, Garden City Community Church and Garden City Historical Society. She was also named a Woman of Distinction by the New York State Assembly in 2009.

The Garden City Country Club is located at 206 Stewart Ave. Admission is $70 per person. Please make checks payable to the Mineola-Garden City Rotary Club and mail to Althea Robinson at 230 Seventh St., Garden City, N.Y. 11530. Or call 516-746-7724, Ext. 101 to make reservations.
