Friday Night Promenade—Seventh Street
The festive atmosphere that we enjoy each year at the Belmont Festival on Seventh Street is planned to continue each Friday night (during the upcoming summer months) from 6 until 10 p.m. I encourage residents and visitors to come down to Seventh Street to enjoy outdoor dining, live entertainment, face painting, balloon animals and much more. Shops will remain open during the evening for your convenience.
Please be sure to check out this column each week to see what other fun activities are added to this exciting event every Friday evening.
Congratulations To The Class Of 2014
Saturday, June 28, marks the graduation of the Garden City High School Class of 2014. On behalf of the Village of Garden City Board of Trustees and the residents we extend our very best wishes and congratulations to the Class of 2014. They are an outstanding group of young people who are a credit to our community and I know that they will be ambassadors of Garden City in their “homes away from home” during their college years. We urge them to keep listening, learning, and to seek knowledge so that they can make a difference. We also wish them success with their college studies and safe journeys to and from college. Keep in mind that your parents are always concerned about your well-being.
Adelphi University
At the close of Adelphi University’s 2013-14 academic year, I want to acknowledge and compliment President Robert A. Scott on the many contributions that he and his administration have made during this past year. While Adelphi University has always been a hospitable neighbor, President Scott has made a special effort to not only attend Village functions to which he has been invited but he has also opened the Adelphi Campus to the entire Garden City Community. This has ranged from hosting an outstanding cultural lecture series, welcoming youth athletic teams onto their playing fields, providing a tour of the campus to the Village Trustees as well as conducting a study on the needs of seniors in Garden City.
On behalf of the board, I look forward to continuing our relationship with Dr. Scott and to partnering with him by sharing resources that will benefit all sectors of the Village. We wish him continued success in opening the fall 2014/spring 2015 academic year.
Special Thanks To The Jay Gallagher Memorial Foundation
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Jay Gallagher Memorial Foundation, who along with the Garden City Youth Lacrosse Program hosted the Seventeenth Annual Jay Gallagher Memorial Tournament two weekends ago on the St. Paul’s Fields. This annual tournament raises funds and public awareness for the Andy Foundation, Mollie Biggane Melanoma Foundation, the Miracle Foundation and Cancer Center for Kids at Winthrop University Hospital. Over 120 teams from the Northeast participated with over 4,000 players, coaches, and parents attending this event. The Jay Gallagher Memorial Foundation is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to raising cancer awareness, improving the lives of those diagnosed with cancer, and finding a cure for the disease.
Special thanks to Tony Randi and Jack Biggane and all of the members, sponsors and volunteers of the Jay Gallagher Memorial Foundation for all that they have done and all that they continue to do, to raise funds for this worthwhile cause.
Board Of Trustees Summer Meeting Schedule
During July and August the board of trustees will meet once a month. The dates are Thursday, July 17 and Thursday, August 14 at 8 p.m. These meetings are held in the boardroom at village hall I encourage all residents to attend board of trustees meetings so as to be thoroughly informed of village issues from a first-hand perspective.
Awards—Boy Scouts
Last Friday I had the pleasure of attending a Court of Honor to recognize Eagle Scout recipients Joseph Salvatore Lo Re and Colin James Noonan. It was an honor to present proclamations on behalf of the Village of Garden City for Boy Scouts of America’s highest honor. I commend these young individuals for their achievements and the positive contributions that they have made to their community.
Please Remember To Continue To Drive With Care
At this time of year with the school year coming to an end, please continue to keep in mind that some of our young people are now out of school and will be playing in their neighborhoods. Please pay particular attention when driving as a few preoccupied young people will inevitably dart out from in between parked cars or fail to look for oncoming traffic when crossing the street.
