On Wednesday July 2 at 11 a.m., the Village of Flower Hill will proudly cut the ribbon and dedicate the new basketball court located on the south side of Stonytown Road in Flower Hill Park.
Senator Jack Martins will do the ribbon cutting honors as the Village is grateful to him for securing a State Dormitory Authority Grant which contributed to a portion of the cost. The full size court is open to all residents of Nassau County, as is the entire park.
Mayor Elaine Phillips of Flower Hill noted that there were no basketball courts available for public play outside of the area public schools. According to the Mayor, “This will be a great recreational opportunity for all residents of the Port Washington peninsula.”
The completion of the court could not have been done without the assistance of the following volunteers. Former Village Trustee and architect, Norman Glavas, created the original park recreational plan and created architectural drawings for the project. Village resident and arborist Ann Frankel is responsible for the lovely landscaping plans. Most vital to the project is Village resident and engineer Charles Vachris. Vachris created the engineering plans and worked closely with the contractor and the county to make this vision into a reality. An avid college and current basketball player, he did this all on his own time at no cost to the Village. Because of his continuing civic responsibility and his love of the game, the Village is dedicating the Basketball Court to him.
