Ex-Village Treasurer Admits to $60K Theft

The former Village of Old Field treasurer has admitted to stealing nearly $60,000 in taxpayer money to fund her personal expenses and shopping sprees in a plea deal that avoids jail time.

Andrea Brosnan pleaded guilty Wednesday at Suffolk County court to grand larceny.

Prosecutors said the 43-year-old Port Jefferson woman spent the stolen money on eBay, Amazon.com and divorce expenses in addition to collecting nearly $13,000 in unearned salary.

Judge Fernando Camacho sentenced her to community service and ordered her to pay $59,151 in restitution. If she fails to complete her sentence, she still faces time behind bars.

Auditors with New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli’s office uncovered the theft and turned their findings over to Suffolk County prosecutors, who took over the investigation last year.

The audit also recommended more than a dozen steps the village needed to take to strengthen its fiscal controls.
