On Sunday afternoon, March 3, Manhasset Association Girl Scout Troop 531 hosted a presentation
called “Body Image – Learn to look at yourself in a new way.” The presentation center on how the media,
society and peers influence how we see ourselves. The event was created by the Troop 531 and was targeted
specifically to girls in the fifth and sixths grades, but the message delivered was one that all women could
appreciate – one of loving who we are, as we are. The presentation included a moving video created by the
makers of Dove as part of their Real Beauty program. In the video women were asked to describe
themselves while, unknowingly, being sketched a forensic artist. Next, a person, whom they had just met,
gives their description of that same women. The contrast is remarkable. After the opening presentation, the
girls broke off into small groups to explore how the media and society deals with body image and how as a
young woman, they have choices on how they view themselves. For information on one of the inspirations of
the presentation go to dove.com/realbeautyskeetches.
