I moved to Manhasset 25 years ago for the great school system. What I have to come to learn over the years, though, is that Manhasset is much more than its good schools. It’s a place where people truly care about their neighbors and local businesses go out of their way.
Yesterday, I spent a very hectic day in New York City. I ran to catch the 5:44 train home (and I mean ran!), but I missed it by literally 1 minute. It was 6:45 when I finally got home and I rushed into town hoping that A & F Market would be open to buy some hamburgers for a quick dinner.
As I rushed down Bayview Avenue, I passed three men. I recognized them from A & F and asked if the store had closed. They said “Yes, at 6:00”. They saw my disappointment and offered to go back, open the store and make me the burgers. So I walked back with Michael, Peter and Mat. With their easy demeanor and smiles they made my burgers.
To them, this may have not been a big deal. But to me, who was tired, frazzled and a little cranky, it was!.
In this day and age, where people look to do the minimum and get home as soon as possible, their gesture was very appreciated. I thank them for their kindness and my family thanks them for a great dinner!!!
