New leaders In Garden City Public Schools
Due to retirements, Garden City Public Schools is welcoming two new administrators: Dawn Cerrone will serve as the director of Athletics and Physical Education, and Lynette Abruzzo was appointed as the director of Pupil Personnel Services.
Cerrone was awarded her building and district administrative certificates from Albany’s College of St. Rose in 2008 and 2009, respectively. She received her Master’s in Health Education from Hofstra University in 1989 and her Bachelor’s in Physical Education from St. Bonaventure University in 1986.
Prior to her employment in Garden City, Cerrone served in Roslyn Public Schools as the Director of Physical Education, Health, Athletics, Intramurals & Recreation since 2010. She has also served as the Director of Physical Education, Health & Athletics in Oyster Bay-East Norwich, where she worked as a physical education teacher from 1986 through her appointment as interim director in the district in November 2008.
At Our Lady of Mercy Academy in Syosset, she served as head varsity basketball coach from 1996-2008 and head varsity lacrosse coach from 2003-08. At Oyster Bay High School, she served as head varsity volleyball coach from 1987-1991 and 2005-08 and head varsity basketball coach from 1986-1990 and 2005-07.
Cerrone received the Nassau County Sports Commission’s High School Coach of the Year in 2008, and Newsday’s Coach of the Year and Nassau-Suffolk Catholic League Coach of the Year in 2002. Under her leadership, Cerrone’s basketball team was named the New York State Catholic High School Athletic Association champions in 2000 and 2004, and Nassau-Suffolk Catholic League’s Undefeated Basketball Champions in 2002. Her volleyball team was the Class C Nassau County Champions in 2006, and the Nassau-Suffolk Catholic League “A” Lacrosse Champions in 2007. Lynette Abruzzo was awarded her building and district administrative certificates from Queens College in 2002, her Master’s in Speech/Language Pathology from Queens College in 1983, and her Bachelor’s in Special and Elementary Education from St. John’s University in 1981.
Abruzzo began her career in Garden City as the Assistant Director of Pupil Personnel Services in January 2014. From 2006 through her hiring in Garden City, Abruzzo served as the Assistant Director of Pupil Personnel Services in West Hempstead UFSD. From 2005-06, she served as Assistant Director of the AHRC Suffolk Chapter of Children’s Services, and from 2001-2005, as an AHRC principal. She served as preschool program director for the New Interdisciplinary School from 2000-01, the coordinator of Related Services for the Early Childhood Development Program at Schneider Children’s Hospital from 1996-2000, where she previously served as the supervisor of Speech/Language Pathology Services from 1989-1996, and a speech/language pathologist from 1986-1989. Abruzzo also worked as a clinical supervisor at Hofstra University from 1991-99, and a speech/language pathologist at the Children’s Center and Vocational Center at UCP, Queens, from 1983-86.
Abruzzo was awarded the Distinguished Service Award by the New York State Speech/Language and Hearing Association in 2005.
