Trio of Garden City residents to be recognized
The Maurer Foundation for Breast Health Education will be marking the 10th anniversary of its Pink Diamond fundraisers on Thursday, Oct. 9 at 6:30 p.m. at East Meadow’s Carltun in Eisenhower Park. Garden City will be well represented for the evening’s festivities thanks to this year’s honorees and event founder Dr. Virginia Maurer. Funds raised at this year’s Pink Diamond Gala will support the Long Island-based non-profit organization’s breast health education mission.
The event will be honoring Thomas Poole, chairman of Hallen Construction Company, Inc., and his son, Shepard Poole, president and CEO of Hallen, for their unyielding support of the foundation through the years. Dr. Eva Chalas, director of Clinical Cancer Services and vice-chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Winthrop University Hospital, will also be honored for her tireless work on women’s health issues here on Long Island.
The Pink Diamond fundraiser is chaired by Mr. and Mrs. Edward Travaglianti, who are renowned for their philanthropic activities and using their resources to benefit communities on Long Island. Mr. Travaglianti is former chairman of the Maurer Foundation and is currently market president of TD Bank on Long Island. He will also serve as emcee for the evening.
“We are excited to have a sensational group of honorees this year, who have each personally made a significant impact here on Long Island,” said Maurer Foundation Chairman Andrew Corrado, “Our next goal is to reach half a million people with information on breast cancer risk factors and the importance of routine exams through the foundation’s presentations to schools, businesses and community organizations. Funds raised from events such as the Pink Diamond Gala will help make that possible.”
The Pink Diamond Gala is coordinated through a dedicated committee of Maurer Foundation staff members and volunteers including Edward and Pat Travaglianti, Mary Jane and Thomas Poole, Shepard Poole, Dr. Virginia Maurer, Pamela Praetorius, Dr. Kathy Weiss, Barbara Gervase, Anne Marie Immerso, Jeffrey Filone,
Amanda Sexton and Allison Meyer. For more information about the Maurer Foundation and their educational programs please visit maurerfoundation.org or call 631-524-5151.
