John F. Collins, president and CEO of Winthrop-University Hospital, recently announced Garden City resident Maureen E. Clancy and East Williston’s Dr. Kevin P. Marzo, will be the honorees for the Hospital’s 23rd Annual Gala, “An Evening in Tuscany,” taking place on Saturday, Oct. 18, at the RXR Plaza in Uniondale.
“As champions for Winthrop, Mrs. Clancy and Dr. Marzo have demonstrated unwavering commitment to the hospital and to the communities it serves and we are pleased to honor them at this year’s gala,” said Collins.
Maureen E. Clancy has been a resident of Garden City since 1960. Having served as a director on the board of Winthrop-University Hospital since 2004, Clancy also serves on the boards of New York Community Bank, the Garden City Historical Society and RotaCare. She has been an active parishioner of St. Joseph’s Church having served on their Parish Council and chaired various appeals over the years. Clancy served as village trustee and was named deputy mayor in 1989. She was appointed to the village board of ethics in 2008.
Having been the first woman to serve on the village board, Clancy was proposed by then-Village Administrator Bob Schoelle to be the first woman member of the Mineola-Garden City Rotary Club in 1987. She later became the first woman to serve as president in 1993.
Clancy is a licensed insurance broker since 1959. Along with her daughter Maura, she runs an insurance agency, Clancy & Clancy Brokerage Ltd., on Seventh Street in Garden City where she is chief financial officer. Having a business in Garden City inspired Maureen to become associated with the Chamber of Commerce, where she served as a director and as president from 1995-97.
Clancy began her work at Winthrop more than 20 years ago by hosting Hospital friend and fund raisers with her husband at their home. Through the years she continued to invest her time and energy to the institution and has advocated on behalf of Winthrop’s heart team for more than two decades. She was an instrumental volunteer leader in making the Heart Surgery Center, Cardiac Catheterization Lab and Electrophysiology Lab the sterling facilities which exist today.
The annual gala raises essential support for Winthrop-University Hospital’s Research and Academic Center Campaign. The event also provides an opportunity to honor the individuals whose hard work and dedication to Winthrop go above and beyond in service to the community. Guests of this year’s Gala will enjoy cocktails, fine dining and special entertainment. For more information about the Winthrop Gala or its honorees, please call 516-663-3398.
