The North Shore Kayak Club will participate in the national American Littoral Society coastal cleanup. The Kayak Club will concentrate its clean-up efforts on Leeds Pond Beach in Plandome. The clean-up will occur on Saturday, Sept. 20 at 10:30 a.m.. Participants can arrive by kayak or canoe, walk over, or drive and park at the Science Museum of Long Island across the street. There is a staircase that descends to the beach.
Working in teams, the refuse will be bagged and cataloged as it is picked up. Volunteers will be provided with gloves and trash bags. Each piece of trash will be recorded and the results forwarded to the American Littoral Society, which tracks coastal trash collection data nationwide. The compilation of this data provides important information as to the type of refuse found within our nation’s waterways.
North Shore Kayak Club beach cleanup co-captains, Pat Valente and Jim Roman, said, “Our waterways are meant to be enjoyed for their serenity and natural beauty. It is very difficult to understand why anyone would want to foul them with trash.”
