New Safety Improvements

Regarding an incident on Sept. 10 where two students left school, Supt. Lucille F. Iconis issued a statement about emergency policy.

“Each time we need to institute emergency protocols, there is an immediate review of our response,” said Iconis.

A letter from Principal Deanna Catapano and Asst. Principal Ryan Aliperti, was sent home in the backpacks of students, stating that the school has been working to improve safety procedures.

Such protocols include giving passes to students for leave during lunch and recess, to go to the bathroom, nurse, or main office. The teacher on duty will record the student’s name and teacher. Students must then give back the pass to indicate their return. The sign out sheet is then passed directly to the new staff member on duty, which indicates those students out of the room. In the case of an emergency, the teacher will have access to a radio or internal phone to make contact if needed.

In regards to pulling a student out of class, teachers will call the specific office they are sending a student down to. The office will then call the teacher upon the student’s arrival, and once the issue has been discussed, an administrator will escort the child back to class.
The updated safety regulations have been reviewed and discussed with all staff, with an understanding that they will be altered again as needed.
