Special Thanks To The Fire Department
Special thanks is due to the fire department for its effort in making Fire Prevention Day/Week the success that it was. Our fire department puts a lot of time, effort and expenses into this project which is designed to make the residents and children aware of the inherent dangers in household fires. If you were not able to attend on Sunday, Oct. 5, please make an effort for your own safety, and the safety of your children, to attend next year. Fire Chief William Castoro and our fire department do an outstanding job protecting our lives and homes and we are grateful for their dedication to the community.
AAA 2014 Community Traffic Safety Awards Program
Last week, Commissioner Jackson and representatives from the Garden City Police Department were honored at the AAA Community Traffic Safety Awards Program. The Village of Garden City was one of only two communities on Long Island to achieve the statewide Platinum Award, AAA’s highest Award, for its commitment to traffic safety and for success in addressing local traffic safety issues. In addition, for the seventh consecutive year, Garden City received the AAA Pedestrian Safety Award. These awards are just one example which represents how fortunate we are in the village to have such a dedicated and efficient police department.
Police Department News
Each week in this column I will be including information from Commissioner Jackson of our police department. This week he has asked that I include the following:
Traffic Enforcement
All residents are reminded that the Village of Garden City Police Department is cracking down on speed, right turn on red without stopping, full stop sign violations and failing to observe speed in school zones as well as other motor vehicle traffic violations.
Sanitation Collection
There will be normal garbage and recycling pickup on Monday, Oct. 13. Residences west of Rockaway Avenue will have their garbage collected on Monday and Thursday and those east of Rockaway Avenue will be collected on Tuesday and Friday. Rubbish will be collected on Wednesday.
Please Keep Garden City Clean
The village has received quite a few complaints over the past few weeks regarding the amount of wrappers, waste, bottles and cans that are not only on Seventh Street and in the business district, but on the streets throughout the village. Wherever you are within the village, please be mindful of your neighbors and not throw litter on the ground.
At this time, I would also like to remind the shoppers and residents to please dispose of their waste in the containers that are located along Seventh Street and along the streets within the business district. If you feel that there are not enough receptacles available for the trash, please call my office at 516-465-4051 to let me know where you feel that additional containers should be placed.
Please Continue To Shop And Dine Outdoors In Garden City
The residents of Garden City are very fortunate to have viable retail businesses on Seventh Street, Franklin Avenue and New Hyde Park Road where there is a good variety of quality merchandise and family dining experiences available to be enjoyed. Please support these businesses and enjoy the products, variety and outstanding customer service. Keep in mind that these merchants save you from traveling outside the village for your needs. Consider the harsh reality if we did not have these businesses here to service our needs. I look forward to seeing everyone in town.
Board Of Trustees Meeting
The next board of trustees meeting will be held on Thursday, Oct. 16. The meeting will be held in the boardroom at village hall and begin at 8 p.m. I encourage all residents to attend board of trustees meetings so as to be thoroughly informed of village issues from a first-hand perspective.
