The art exhibit Current Expressions will be on view at the Wisser Memorial Gallery at NYIT New York Institute of Technology in Old Westbury during the month of October. The show features eight local artists and photographers including Erica Angiolillo, Roni M. Chastain, Marzena Grabczynska Lorenc, Jill Rader Levine, Flo Siemsen, Susan Tiffen, Maxine Townsend-Broderick, and Debbie Viola. A group donation was given to Long Island Cares, Inc.

The League of Women Voters of Central Nassau is sponsoring a talk by Town of Hempstead Councilwoman Dorothy Goosby on Thursday, Oct. 23 at 7 p.m. at the Hempstead Library, Nichols Court and Washington Avenue. The public is invited to attend.
Senior I.D. Card Program and flu shots for seniors (60+) will be held at the Levittown Public Library, 1 Bluegrass Ln. on Thursday, Oct. 23 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Appointments are needed for the flu shot, but not for the Senior ID Program. Flu shots are limited. Registrations for this event can be made by phone (516-731-5728), or in-person at the Levittown Library reference desk. Arrive 15 minutes prior to your scheduled time to complete the required forms. Please bring proper identification, your Medicare card or primary insurance card. It is not necessary to have insurance to receive a flu shot. The pneumonia shot will also be available.

Lecture: “A Night with the One and Only Daniel Akner” on Friday, Oct. 24 at 8 p.m. at Levittown Hall, hosted by Eyes of Learning, Inc., non-profit metaphysical study group with its primary focus on learning. Members: $10; non-members: $15.

The Big Apple College Fair, in sponsorship with the College Access Consortium of New York (CACNY) will be held at the Jacob Javitts Center, Hall 1A in New York City on Oct. 25 from 1 to 4 p.m.
Island Trees High School Homecoming will be held on Saturday, Oct. 25.
Heart Screen New York is a free program provided by the Louis J. Acompora Memorial Foundation and the Dominic A. Murray Memorial 21 Foundation. The next heart screening will be held at Levittown Memorial Education Center, 150 Abbey Ln. in Levittown, on Saturday, Oct. 25 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The goal of this collaborative effort is to increase awareness about sudden cardiac arrest in youth and the importance of cardiac screenings and early detection in youths. The screening is open to all students ages 12 to 24, regardless of the school they attend. Several leading cardiologists from area hospitals will be offering their services to the screening. The screening will consist of a heart health survey, heart sounds physical, ECG and Echocardiogram. To register for the free youth heart screening, visit www.stayclassy.org/heartscreennewyork.

The Wantagh Memorial Congregational Church presents their annual Stone Soup Open Mic on Sunday, Oct. 26 from 2 to 4 p.m. to benefit the Freeport Emergency Food Pantry. All ages and faiths are welcome to participate and attend. Admission is at least one item of non-perishable food. Come in costume if you want. Everyone who comes in costume will be entered into a drawing for a prize. Choirs, and other groups, as well as soloists, instrumentals, poetry and dramatic readings, magicians and family friendly comedians are welcome.
There is a time limit of five minutes per act. Participants should be prepared to perform something appropriate for all ages as there will be young children present. Since this is a food benefit, songs about food will be the sub-theme, but are not required. If you do not have an accompanist, bring sheet music. There is one mic stand, a couple of mics, a keyboard, an organ and an upright piano. The church is located at 1845 Wantagh Ave., in Wantagh. Senior I.D. Card Program for seniors (60+) will be held at the Island Trees Library, 36 Farmedge Rd. on Thursday, Oct. 30 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. There is no fee, no appointment needed.
Sunday, November 2
On Sunday, Nov. 2, Nassau County will hold its second annual Veterans’ Parade in Levittown, honoring WWII veterans. The parade will begin at 10 a.m. Assemble in the southeast parking lot at Gardiners Ave. and Hempstead Tpke. Parade will travel west on Hempstead Tpke. to Levittown Veterans Memorial Park for a brief ceremony.
