Sophie Vasilas, a Manhasset resident for 47 years, passed away on October 1, 2014 at the age of 90.
Sophie, a graduate of Hunter College in Manhattan, was a former elementary school teacher in Queens, a founding member of the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Flushing, New York and Archangel Michael Greek Orthodox Church in Roslyn, New York with her husband Dr. Anthony Vasilas. She was Philoptochos President at both churches.
Sophie was a founding member of the Hellenic Women’s Club of North Shore and an auxiliary member of the Beekman Downtown Hospital in Manhattan where her husband Anthony was director of Radiology. She enjoyed singing in the church choir, travel, interior design and sewing. Sophie was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, sister-in-law, aunt and friend.
She is survived by her beloved husband Dr. Anthony Vasilas, her children Peter Vasilas and his wife Sharon, Paula Roussos and her husband Sakis, and Constance Parsons and her husband Ramon, eleven grandchildren and her brothers Demetrios Pappas and Nicholas Pappas and his wife Alexandra, and her sister-in-law Elpis Chandras.
A Memorial Service will take place on Nov. 2 at the Archangel Michael Greek Orthodox Church in Port Washington, N.Y. during the regular church service.
