Finance Options For Students

Richard Milella, founder and director of the not-for-profit Long Island Funding for Education (L.I.F.E.), will discuss methods how to maximize your family’s eligibility for college financial aid from 7 – 8:45 p.m. Middle and high school students and their parents are encouraged to attend. Second Meeting Of Chapter Chat

Join the Children’s Room from 4 to 5 p.m. for the second meeting of its second grade book discussion, Chapter Chat. At the meeting, attendees will be discussing Doug Cushman’s Don’t Sit On My Lunch (a Ready Freddy book) by Abby Klein. There will be games, a craft, and other book-related fun. Registration began Monday, Sept. 8. Parents can sign up current second-graders in the Children’s Room. A beverage and snack will be provided. The meeting is an hour. Second Annual Fine Craft Fair

Garden City’s Ethical Humanist Society will be hosting this event from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fine craft artists working in clay, fiber, paper, metal, glass and more will have their work for sale at this special one-day fair. Members of the Long Island Craft Guild will be showing unique glass plates, silk and wool scarves, prints, ceramic vases and silver jewelry with semi-precious stones, with prices ranging from $5 to $500. Admission is free. The Ethical Humanist Society (EHS) will hold a fund-raising snack sale during the fair. The EHS building is located at 38 Old Country Rd. in Garden City and is two miles west of Meadowbrook Parkway next to the blue water tower. Marvelous Movie Matinée

A screening of director John Huston’s 1941 classic The Maltese Falcon starring Humphrey Bogart and Mary Astor will be held from 1:30 to 4 p.m. at the Garden City Public Library. Zing Went The Strings

Adelphi University is pleased to announce that the acclaimed chamber music ensemble Trio Solisti will be performing on Saturday, Nov. 22, at 8 p.m. at the Performing Arts Center located at Adelphi University. Trio Solisti, which marks its 10th year as ensemble-in-residence at Adelphi University, has forged its reputation as “the most exciting piano trio in America,” according to The New Yorker, with a performance style that combines exceptional virtuosity and penetrating musical insight. The acclaimed ensemble possesses a broad repertoire that encompasses most of the standard trio selections, as well as many new works by contemporary composers. Founded in 2001, Trio Solisti brings together three of the most sought after artists of their generation – violinist Maria Bachmann, cellist Alexis Pia-Gerlach, and pianist Adam Neiman. Its performance on Nov. 22 will feature Schubert’s Sonatensatz in B Flat Major, D.28, Rachmaninoff’s Trio No. 2 Elegiac,” Op. 9, and Brahms’ Trio No. 1 in B Major, Op. 8. The popular trio has earned a reputation for soulful and passionate performances marked by soloistic virtuosity, electric energy, seamless ensemble playing and thrilling abandon.

Trio Solisti will also be giving an insightful, entertaining and free lecture, with musical excerpts from the concert repertoire, on Wednesday, Nov. 19, at 11 a.m. at the Concert Hall. The trio will hold a free Master Class the same day and location at 1 p.m., where the artists will work with Adelphi University music students to help bring out the best in their instrumental performances. Trio Solisti have performed in major concert halls and cultural institutions across the country, including Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center and more. Their collaborations have included performances with Yo-Yo Ma, Mstislav Rostropovich, Leonard Slatkin, James DePriest, Dawn Upshaw, Gilbert Kalish, The American String Quartet and the St. Lawrence String Quartet. Long Island Piano Duo

Your Widowed Social Group

This is a non-sectarian, no-profit organization of widows and widowers 50 plus years of age. Meetings are held on the third Wednesday of each month and are held at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church located on Franklin Avenue and Fifth Street in Garden City at 7:30 p.m. There is a nominal fee for members and non-members.
