Peter Zuckerman beat out East Williston Deputy Mayor Bonnie Parente last week for the race in the 2nd Council District of North Hempstead. Zuckerman, an East Hills democrat, was appointed to the town board in January after Thomas Dwyer resigned in November 2013.
Zuckerman will serve the remaining year in Dwyer’s term after winning the special election last week. The election for a four-year term will be held in November 2015.
“I was recommended by Supervisor Judi Bosworth and approved with bipartisan support of the Town Board. This has been a dream job for me,” Zuckerman said. “I had the pleasure of serving the residents of the incorporated Village of East Hills for 11 great years, but this job has given me the opportunity to expand the area I represent and, thus, the opportunity to be of service to a greater number of people.”
Zuckerman garnered 4,778 votes to Parente’s 4,107 tallies, winning by a mere 671 votes.
“I have also started several important projects during my nine months in office, and I plan on completing those and visioning many others for the future,” he said.
Parente pushed town building department reform in her campaign. Her election would have ended the Democratic supermajority on the town council.
“The turnout was very high for an off-season election in the town council,” she said. “I’m very proud of the campaign myself and my team put on. I had an amazing support system and I’m proud we ran a good, clean race.”
The 2nd town council district includes Albertson, East Williston, East Hills, Greenvale, Manhasset Hills, North New Hyde Park, Roslyn Harbor, Roslyn Heights and Searingtown.
