The Island Trees Cross Country teams continue their improvement in 2014. This year the girls’ team has a record of 8-2 and with their victories over Clarke and Wheatley High Schools, they clinched the Division Championship for the first time in Island Trees High School history.
The girls are led by senior Captain Angela Brocco who has been rewriting the girl’s record boards. Brocco set the school record for the Warwick Valley 5000 meter course on Sept. 20.
The following week, sophomore Catherine Zamroz led the team to victory over Friends Academy and Seaford.
Right on her heals was 7th-grader Cara Duffy who has medaled in every invitational the Bulldogs have competed in. After a successful meet at Six Flags Safari Invitational the team took on top ranked Locust Valley and although they lost, five girls qualified for All Conference distinction.
Sophomore Brittany Jenkofsky has been the team’s third runner all season and senior Leanna Donahue, a new comer to the sport has been a solid addition as the all-important 5th scorer.
“As a coach, seeing a team which barely existed three years ago, perform on a championship level is a great testament to the work these Lady Bulldogs have put in.”
Rounding out the varsity is Alexa Dolgos, Samantha Brunie and Keilah Parada. The next meet is the prestigious Manhattan Invitational at the legendary Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx.
