The 11th annual Long Island 2 Day Walk to Fight Breast Cancer took place this past spring on June 7. As a result of everyone’s hard work, the Manhasset Woman’s Coalition Against Breast Cancer (MWCABC), thirteen other breast cancer beneficiaries and four grant recipients received a combined $525,000. Accepting the check for MWCABC at the July luncheon was Linda Kane, MWCABC board member and LI2DAY chair. The event supports breast cancer research and essential outreach services and educational programs for women and their families affected by breast cancer on Long Island. In addition, LI2DAY’S mission was changed this year to include helping women with gynecological cancers. One hundred percent of what is raised stays on Long Island.
This year, for the first time, the LI2DAY Walk was modified from a 35-mile walk to a one-day, 13.1 mile walk. This change boosted the number of participants about 50%, to over 600 walkers.
The Manhasset Woman’s Coalition Against Breast Cancer is grateful to the LI2day organization for providing crucial funding for their Outreach Program. This year the program received $31,700, bringing the total received by the Outreach Program to over $283,500 since 2005.
The MWCABC grant allows the coalition to assist the women in our area who have been diagnosed with breast cancer, as well as support prevention, wellness and educational programs.
In 2013, Outreach served 74 breast cancer cases, delivered 163 meals, provided transportation, wigs, financial support, household help and wellness services such as massage and acupuncture. The Outreach Program is on the front lines providing help to the women in need here and now.
The MWCABC would like to thank their 2014 LI2DAY team of walkers: Suzy Alpert, Karen Barnes, Kathleen Barry, Kerian Carlstrom, Barbara Duvnjak, Katherine and Kelly Geisecke, Kathy Gray, Linda Kane, MaryAnn Jones, Aline Kassabian, Elizabeth Macedonio, Katherine Miller, Nancy Paganucci, Mark Sauvigne, Judy Taylor, Traci Viklundand and Monica Zenobio.
