A former Elmont resident has been acquitted of raping a 14-year-old girl when she walked by his house on her way to school, but was convicted of sexually abusing her.
A Nassau County jury found Amit Singh guilty Thursday of misdemeanor charges of sexual abuse and endangering the welfare of a child. He was found no guilty on two counts of rape.
Authorities have said that the 33-year-old man grabbed the victim off the street after trying to coax her into his Rosalind Avenue home, forced her inside the house where the attack occurred and then drove her to class at Sewanhaka High School at 10 a.m. on March 11, 2009.
The victim told a teacher and later positively identified Singh, then 27, in a photo array, but the suspect boarded a flight to India before DNA evidence linked him to the rape the following month, investigators have said. He was extradited from India last year and has been held without bail since.
He faces up to a year in jail when he is sentenced Jan. 5. But, he is also facing a charge of violating his probation stemming from a prior conviction for cocaine possession, which could result in a longer prison term.
