Second Step is a research-based program that feels like play but builds critical social and school-readiness skills. These skills help young children recognize and manage their emotions, develop care and concern for others, establish positive relationships, make responsible decisions and handle challenging situations constructively.

Our elementary school librarians, in collaboration with classroom teachers, conduct interactive lessons that support academics and form the foundation for happy, healthy kids who succeed. Lessons include songs, large photo-lesson cards, role-playing and videos.

The focus is on developing children’s language skills and teaching children to identify feelings, solve problems, and get along with others. Lessons support skills in the specific areas of learning, empathy, emotion management and problem solving. Second Step strategies are reinforced in classrooms, in the cafeteria, at recess and throughout the school day to help promote a safe and respectful school climate for all children.Cap
