Administrators, students, staff and members of the local American Legion and VFW posts in Levittown joined Senator Kemp Hannon on the front lawn of the Levittown Memorial Education Center to dedicate the district’s first new flagpole in a commemorative ceremony on Dec. 8.
“This flagpole is a symbol of the Levittown community and what this nation has fought for,” Hannon said as the American flag was raised.
A legislative grant of $75,000 provided by Hannon will allow the district to replace flagpoles at each of the schools by the end of the 2014-15 school year, Superintendent of Schools
Dr. Tonie McDonald added.
During the ceremony, high school student council presidents Audre Gale (MacArthur) and Christina Reilly (Division Avenue) and middle school student council officers Gabrielle Gately (Salk, vice president), Alice Johnson (Salk, president) and Brandon Smith (Wisdom Lane, president) led spectators in the pledge of allegiance.
The Abbey Lane Elementary School chorus, under the direction of Judy Goodman, sang patriotic music.
Addressing the students, American Legion member Andrew Booth said, “You will remember the day when this flagpole was erected. The flag that flies is a symbol of freedom and should always be respected.”
