A 54-year-old East Meadow man was fatally struck by a Suffolk County police patrol car in East Islip over the weekend, authorities said.

Craig Schiffer was crossing Main Street when he was struck by an eastbound police car that was responding to a 911 call at 10:34 p.m. Saturday, authorities said.

The victim was taken by Islip Exchange Ambulance Company to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore, where he was later pronounced dead. The two officers in the vehicle were not injured.

Vehicular Crime Unit detectives impounded the police car, are continuing the investigation and ask anyone who may have witnessed this crash to call them at 631-852-6555 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS. All calls will be kept confidential.
