Stay For The Children

—By  Kathleen Granados

The ninth-and 10th-grade Mineola Winter Concert at the high school was awesome. Each and every group did an excellent job and I am in awe of them all. I would know because I stayed for the entire concert.

Thank you to every parent who stayed for the whole show as you were able to see each and every group and give them the attention that they were deserving of. Shame on all you parents and spectators who found it appropriate to get up and walk out before the end of the show, right after your children were finished performing.

The courage it takes for children to put themselves out there in front of an audience is great. How do you think it makes the kids on stage feel when they see a whole lot of people leaving before their eyes?

I know you were there to support your children in their endeavors but your children have classmates and peers who equally deserve an audience. If anyone wonders why the sense of community has been lost, all they have to do is see the rude, inconsiderate behavior that goes on at a school concert. I no longer wonder why so many children are self-involved, rude, inconsiderate, and lack empathy. Children model what they see.
