Hempstead Man Charged With Attempted Murder

A 23-year-old suspect has been arrested for allegedly shooting a man in the chest during a robbery in the alleged gunman’s hometown of Hempstead four weeks ago, Nassau County police said.

Hempstead village police officers Thursday arrested Bennie Kinard on charges of second-degree attempted murder, robbery, criminal use of a firearm and criminal possession of a weapon.

Police said the suspect forced the 25-year-old victim to hand over his cash and cell phone before shooting him once on Henry Street at 10 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 3.

The victim was taken to a local hospital, where he is now recovering from surgery.

Kinard will be arraigned Friday at First District Court in Hempstead.
