The Mineola School District hosted the FIRST Lego League competition on Saturday, Jan. 31. Approximately 50 groups competed in two sessions to score the highest in design and teamwork with their robots. Groups had to use their engineering skills to create and develop a robot that could complete approximately a dozen simple tasks in a short period of time.
This is the first time Mineola has hosted the Lego League competition. Mineola Middle School had two teams competing.
Mineola announced it was hosting the competition back in early January. Schools across Nassau, including nearby Garden City, New Hyde Park, Roslyn, Floral Park, Carle Place and Great Neck, had teams in the robotics match.
“This is quite an event for the county as well as our district,” School District Superintendent Michael Nagler said recently.
Four teams from the Jackson Avenue School will participate in the junior FLL regionals on Feb. 28.
The league is an international program for children that combines a hands-on, interactive robotics program with a sports-like atmosphere. For this year’s FLL Challenge throughout the world, FLL World Class, more than 265,000 children from 80 countries will participate in league events.
