A Brooklyn man has admitted to shooting a Nassau County police officer while the attacker fled a New Hyde Park home invasion two years ago.
Cong Xu pleaded guilty Tuesday at Nassau County court to assault and burglary.
“This burglar had a handgun when he entered a Nassau family’s home,” Acting Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas said. “Officer Mohit Arora responded and was shot protecting innocent civilians. As a result of Officer Arora’s heroism and today’s guilty plea, this defendant will no longer be a threat to others for a long time to come.”
Prosecutors said the 22-year-old gunman and a second assailant broke into a Campbell Street home, where the victims called 911 before the duo fled on Aug. 14, 2013.
Xu fired several rounds from a handgun at responding officers as he fled, hitting Officer Mohit Arora in the lower abdomen.
Officer Arora was taken to North Shore Hospital, where he was treated for his injuries. Xu was apprehended nearby.
Judge Philip Grella is expected to sentence Xu to 30 years in prison when Xu is sentenced on April 2.
- His co-defendant, 23-year-old Renhang Qiu of Brooklyn, pleaded guilty las year to burglary and is expected to be sentenced Feb. 23 seven years in prison.
