Grant Burg, a Syosset High School senior, recently signed his National Letter of Intent to play soccer for Division 1 Lafayette College in Easton, PA.
Grant started playing soccer at the age of three for the Syosset Soccer Club. He has fond memories of playing with his friends and classmates at Stillwell Fields and Baylis School.
“Syosset Soccer was my beginning, where I got my foundation and learned the fundamentals, basics and love of the game,” said Burg. “Playing in college was always my goal.”
After Intramurals, Burg played for the Long Island Junior Soccer League’s Long Island United Program, a highly selective premier program of players from all over Long Island that utilized college coaches and facilities. He also played for LI Rough Riders Soccer Youth League, as well as Long Island and New York state Olympic Development Program.
Burg was then selected for the U.S. Soccer Development Academy, the highest level of youth soccer designed to produce college, U.S. National Team and professional players. He played for the BW Gottschee Academy for the last four years and has been his team’s leading scorer as center forward.
Burg also played for Syosset High School, playing as an eighth- and ninth-grader. He was a varsity player in his sophomore year earning All-Conference, and had an integral role starting every game in 2012 when Syosset High School won the Nassau County Soccer Championship for the first time in 14 years. Burg also played varsity basketball for Syosset, achieving All-Conference and Scholar Athlete awards.
It has been a long, hard journey for Burg, traveling into the city four to five times per week for two hour practices while maintaining a 4.0 GPA. He also traveled to England and Italy to train, as well as played in College Showcases held throughout our country.
“All my hard work, determination and perseverance has paid off,” he said. “I am extremely grateful and appreciative, as well as, owe tremendous gratitude to all my coaches who have helped me along the way, from my start in Syosset to my BW Gottschee Academy. I also would like to thank my parents for all their support and encouragement along the way to allow me to pursue my passion and dream.”
Lafayette College is a high academic Division 1 college that participates in the NCAA Patriot League. Lafayette Head men’s soccer coach Dennis Bohn is excited for Burg to join the program and hopefully make a positive impact in his freshman year.
