Campaign To Catch Jericho Shooter

Officials from the Nassau County Police Department are cranking up the award for information leading to the arrest of a suspect still wanted in connection with a string of robberies and one homicide in Jericho.

At a press conference on Friday, March 6, Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano joined Acting Police Commissioner Thomas Krumpter and Police Chief Kevin Smith at the site of the Jericho homicide to unveil a new campaign aimed at drumming up tips from the community. The suspect shot and killed a BP gas station attendant on Jericho Turnpike on Jan. 28 and is also wanted for 10 gas station robberies in Westbury, Hicksville and Jericho between Dec. 20 and Feb. 8.

Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $35,000—$25,000 for the murder and $10,000 for the robberies—for information leading to an arrest.

Mangano and officials unveiled a large billboard at the BP station where Hany Awad, 57, of Levittown, was shot and killed by the suspect. The billboard, mounted on a truck, will visit various neighborhoods in an effort to shake loose some information.

The suspect is described as a black man between 5-feet, 11-inches and 6-feet tall, with a thin build, wearing all black Nike clothing, a black mask, black gloves, black Nike sneakers with red laces and armed with either a black or a silver revolver. The assailant has hit nine gas stations and two 7-Eleven stores.
