More than 30 Farmingdale High School students in the school’s Ambassador Club recently visited the Holocaust Museum in Glen Cove as part of a special project called Adopt a Survivor. The students visited the museum to meet Holocaust survivors, interview them and learn firsthand accounts of the event, while promising to keep the legacies of the survivors alive by sharing their stories with the next generation.
“The students get to share history up close. They learn about the Holocaust through the personal connection they make with their survivor,” said Farmingdale High School Ambassador Club advisor Robert Primavera. “It is amazing to watch the relationships develop and the respect and reverence the students bring to the project.”
The Adopt a Survivor project requires the students to share the stories of their “adopted” Holocaust survivors in 20 years by visiting schools, churches or civic groups and passing on the stories to the next generation. The goal is to ensure the struggles of a group of people are never forgotten and a reminder that all lives matter regardless of differences.
