Under the direction of art teachers, Ellen O’Sullivan and Ricki Weisfelner, the Woodward Parkway 5th Grade Scenery Club created art. Inspired by Keith Haring, the students laid on their concert backdrop mural in a very unconventional way. Students first drew sketches of the characters they wanted to create. Then they all became part of the art as they posed and positioned themselves on the backdrop making sure to create a balanced composition. Working in pairs, bodies were traced. Then style was added to show the influence of this famous artist who used New York City as a blank canvas.
“It fills me with so much pride to watch these young artists brainstorm, collaborate, analyze and interpret the art of a fine artist, come to consensus and develop their artistic skills, all while having a ball! Art education is vital in the development of the whole child, and we are very fortunate that the Farmingdale School District supports our program,” said Woodward Parkway Art teacher, Ricki Weisfelner.
