Between 700 and 800 children, from kindergarten through seventh grade, will be participating in the spring PYA season that has just begun. Spring 2015 sports will include boys and girls softball, baseball, lacrosse, roller hockey and tennis. Almost 150 volunteer coaches and assistants will give freely of their time to make the season enjoyable and successful for the children.

Boys baseball (3 to 7) began on March 28, along with girls softball (2 to 7). Girls softball (K and 1), boys baseball (1 and 2) and developmental girls lacrosse (K-2) will begin on April 18. Boys baseball (K) and developmental boys lacrosse (K and 1) begin on April 19. Roller hockey will start on April 27, and tennis will start on May 7, with partiipants selected by lottery. The season for all sports will end during the weekend of June 20.
This will be the 52nd year for Port Washington Youth Activities, which started in 1963. PYA is the largest youth sports program in Port Washington and its mission is to provide organized youth athletics in a variety of sports for all the children of our community. “PYA strives to develop skills and teach an understanding of how to play the game while at the same time developing character, instilling the high standards of good sportsmanship, teamwork, community, safety and respect for the individual in order to prepre for future success,” according to the PYA Mission Statement.
PYA’s home fields are the Lion’s Field complex at the end of Glen Lane. PYA is the only Little League affiliated youth sports program in town, and the PYA safety plan is approved by Little League. For more information, visit pyasports.org.
