Through April 30

Still Life Through A Cinephile’s Eye

Fine art photography by Gene Brown will be exhibited through April 30 in the Garden City Public Library’s gallery located at 60 Seventh St., in Garden City. Diverse photographic styles from abstract-reflective images to nature will be on view.
Gene Brown is a retired freelance writer who has loved photography since the 1970s, but never found enough time to perfect his skills and extend his vision until retirement. Last fall he started an image-a-day email mailing list (103 members currently) to give himself the incentive to shoot new photos. It’s a labor of love bordering on obsession: he is happiest when working on his images and was even out looking for images during this recent brutal winter.

His interests run the gamut from nature to the abstract, although he finds himself increasingly drawn to the mystery and imaginative possibilities of what we often overlook in our visual environment: the melding of reality and reflections from store windows, mannequins and the like. More and more he looks for subjects that encourage one to imagine their stories.
Brown attended Queens College and Columbia University while studying for a masters in American History. He authored a number of books, including Movie Time: A Chronology of Hollywood From It’s Beginnings to the Present; Show Time: A Chronology of the Theatre From It’s Beginnings to the Present; and biographies for young adults of Anne Frank, Duke Ellington and Bette Davis. He also edited The New York Times Encyclopedia of Film and was senior writer on The American Film Institute Desk Reference (which is in the Garden City collection). He is currently a member of the Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Collective.

Exhibits are free and open to the public during regular library hours. Installation and removal dates are subject to change. For hours and directions please call 516-742-8405 or visit www.gardencitypl.org. Exhibit funding is provided by Friends of the Garden City Public Library.
