The Garden City Public Library is hosting a Girls Who Code Club that will offer computer science education and technical skill development to girls in 6th through 12th grade. The club will meet on Saturday afternoons from 2 to 4:45 p.m. in the computer lab on the lower level of the library, located at 60 Seventh St. The club started on March 14 and continues on April 11, 17 and 25, May 16, 23 and 30 and June 6 and 13. Each lesson will build upon the previous lesson so attendance at each meeting is strongly encouraged. The curriculum includes monthly project-based activities and the opportunity to build real-world software including mobile apps and games.
Girls Who Code is a national nonprofit organization working to close the gender gap in the technology and engineering sectors. The Girls Who Code mission is to work to educate, inspire and equip middle school and high school girls with the computing skills necessary to pursue opportunities in computing fields. Their aim is to close the gender gap in technology and engineering sectors.
No prior experience in coding or programming is necessary. The girls will learn basic coding and programming including variables, loops and conditionals.
There is no cost to participate in the club but the club size is limited to the first 20 girls who register. Please register at www.gardencitypl.org. Registered participants will be expected to attend all sessions. Please bring your library card with you to each meeting.
The instructor for the Club is Anna Korsakova, a data analytics manager at American Express. Dessie DiMino, an 11th-grader at the high school, who spent seven weeks at the Girls Who Code Summer Immersion Program last summer, started the club and will be the teacher’s assistant. There may also be guest speakers and other perks.
