South Grove Elementary School fourth-grader Timothy Chan was recently selected to compete in the National Geographic Society’s Geographic State Bee in Albany.

The state-level competition is the second tier of the contest, which has been in existence for the past 27 years. School-wide bees for grades four through eight were held throughout New York to determine the school champion. The school champions took a qualifying test, which was submitted to the National Geographic Society.

Chan will compete against 100 other students in the state bee. From there, a state champion will be crowned and advance to the national competition in Washington, D.C., on May 11-13. The winner of the national competition will receive a $50,000 college scholarship and an all-expense-paid trip to the Galapagos Islands.
